Quick answer

Crash games are instant-win casino games in which a multiplier climbs from 1x until it "crashes" at a random point; you win your bet times the multiplier if you cash out before the crash. Chicken Road, Aviator, Spaceman and JetX use this format; Plinko and Penalty Shoot-out are close relatives with a single decision per round. RTPs are high, 95–98%, and rounds last seconds. In Google Trends for Canada, Chicken Road is now the most searched crash game, ahead of Plinko. Crash games are offered at offshore casinos and at many registered Ontario and Alberta sites; most bonus terms exclude them or count them at a reduced rate.

JetXSmartSoft GamingAbout 97%When to cash outShared jackpot
Penalty Shoot-outEvoplay96%When to take the moneyUp to five shots

RTPs are the figures stated by each provider; casinos may run other versions. Check the game's rules screen.

How crash games work

  1. Place a bet before the round starts, usually within a 5–10 second window.
  2. The round begins and the multiplier rises: 1.00x, 1.20x, 1.50x, 2x and up.
  3. Cash out at any moment to win your bet times the current multiplier.
  4. The crash ends the round at a random point; bets still running are lost.

Many rounds crash below 2x, and some crash almost immediately; a few run to very high multipliers. The crash point is decided before the round starts, so watching the curve does not help.

Provably fair crash games

Several crash games, including Aviator and Plinko by Spribe, are provably fair: the crash point is generated from cryptographic seeds, some provided by players, and the result can be checked after the round. This proves the round was not changed after bets were placed. It does not change the house edge, which is still built into the maths.

Games that are not provably fair use a certified random number generator, tested by independent labs, like any slot.

Crash game strategy: what works and what does not

No strategy changes the RTP. What you can control is how volatile your session is:

  • Low auto cash-out (1.2x–1.5x): wins most rounds, small wins, occasional losses that cancel several wins.
  • High targets (5x–10x+): lose most rounds, rare big wins.
  • Two bets (Aviator, JetX): one with a low auto cash-out to recover the stake, one left to run. This only splits your risk; it does not beat the game.

Systems that double your bet after a loss (Martingale) fail when a run of early crashes meets the table maximum or your budget. "Predictor" apps and Telegram signals that claim to know the next crash point are scams.

Crash games are casino games, treated like slots. In Ontario and Alberta, they are legal only at registered sites, and only versions certified for that market. In other provinces, offshore casinos licensed abroad offer them, and some provincial sites carry similar instant games. Do not play crash games on unlicensed apps that promise "earning" or guaranteed withdrawals. See casinos by province.

Best crash games to play

  • For the highest stated RTP: Chicken Road (98%).
  • For the classic crash format: Aviator, the game that made the category popular.
  • For one decision per round: Plinko.
  • For a softer exit: Spaceman, where you can cash out half your bet early and let the rest ride.
  • For sports fans: Penalty Shoot-out.

Crash games and bonuses

Most welcome bonuses exclude crash games or count them at 0–10% toward wagering, because their high RTP and quick rounds make bonuses easy to clear. Playing an excluded game with bonus money can void the bonus. Read wagering requirements and compare no wagering bonuses, where any winnings are yours.

Crash games on mobile

Crash games were built for phones: portrait layouts, one-tap bets and auto cash-out. They run in mobile browsers and casino apps. See casino apps.

Crash game risks

Crash games are fast: a round every 10–20 seconds means hundreds of bets an hour. The quick pace and the "near miss" of a crash just after you would have cashed out can make it hard to stop. Set a session budget, use auto cash-out, and stop when the budget is gone.

Crash games glossary

  • Multiplier: the number your bet is multiplied by if you cash out.
  • Crash point: the multiplier at which the round ends.
  • Auto cash-out: an automatic cash-out at a target multiplier.
  • Provably fair: a system that lets players verify each result cryptographically.
  • Instant game: a casino game with one quick round and no reels, such as Plinko or Penalty Shoot-out.

Crash game maths: a worked example

Take a game with a 97% RTP and C$1 bets. Whatever cash-out target you choose, you lose about C$0.03 per bet on average, so 300 rounds (roughly an hour at a fast pace) cost about C$9. The target only changes how that average is reached:

  • Auto cash-out at 1.5x: you win C$0.50 on roughly 65% of rounds and lose C$1 on the rest. Results stay close to the average.
  • Auto cash-out at 10x: you win C$9 on fewer than one round in ten and lose C$1 on all the others. You can be well up or well down after an hour.

The same logic applies to Chicken Road's difficulty levels and Plinko's risk settings: they redistribute the same RTP between frequent small wins and rare big ones.

A short history of crash games

Crash games started on Bitcoin gambling sites in the mid-2010s, where the multiplier curve and provably fair seeds suited crypto players. Spribe's Aviator, released in 2019, brought the format to mainstream online casinos with a polished mobile design, two bets per round and a social live-bets panel. Since then, many providers have released their own versions: Spaceman by Pragmatic Play, JetX by SmartSoft Gaming, and step-by-step variants such as Chicken Road by InOut Games.

Other instant win games

Crash games sit in a wider "instant games" category that many casinos list separately:

  • Mines: open tiles on a grid while avoiding hidden mines; each safe tile raises the multiplier.
  • Dice and Hi-Lo: bet on a number range or whether the next card is higher or lower, with adjustable odds.
  • Plinko: a single drop with adjustable rows and risk.
  • Sports-themed games such as Penalty Shoot-out.

They share the same traits: high stated RTPs, very short rounds, and usually no bonus eligibility.

How to choose a crash game casino

  1. Licence first: a registered Ontario or Alberta site, or an offshore casino with a licence you can verify. See our legit online casinos guide.
  2. Fast withdrawals: crash players tend to cash out often; compare fast payout casinos.
  3. Low minimum bets: C$0.10 bets let you try targets without a big budget.
  4. Responsible gambling tools: deposit limits, loss limits and session reminders.
