RTP, volatility and max win come from each provider's published figures, with known lower versions noted.
Casinos choose which RTP version to run. Check the game info before you play.

Blackjack is the casino game with the best odds for players: on standard rules (3:2 blackjack payout, dealer stands on soft 17, six or eight decks), basic strategy brings the house edge down to about 0.5%, an RTP of roughly 99.5%. The aim is to beat the dealer's hand without going over 21. Online you can play RNG blackjack from about C$0.50 a hand with free demos, or live blackjack with a real dealer. Avoid tables that pay 6:5 for blackjack: they add about 1.4% to the house edge. In Ontario and Alberta, play for real money at registered sites only.
Every casino on our list offers blackjack. These have the widest choice of RNG and live tables among the 165 we review.
For multi-deck blackjack where the dealer stands on soft 17 and doubling after splitting is allowed (the most common online rules). "Dealer" is the dealer's up-card.
| Your hand | Dealer 2–3 | Dealer 4–6 | Dealer 7–9 | Dealer 10–A |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 or less | Hit | Hit | Hit | Hit |
| 9 | Hit (double vs 3) | Double | Hit | Hit |
| 10 | Double | Double | Double | Hit |
| 11 | Double | Double | Double | Double vs 10, hit vs A |
| 12 | Hit | Stand | Hit | Hit |
| 13–16 | Stand | Stand | Hit | Hit |
| 17+ | Stand | Stand | Stand | Stand |
| Your hand | Dealer 2 | Dealer 3–4 | Dealer 5–6 | Dealer 7–8 | Dealer 9–A |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A,2 / A,3 | Hit | Hit | Double | Hit | Hit |
| A,4 / A,5 | Hit | Hit (double vs 4) | Double | Hit | Hit |

Never take insurance. It is a side bet on the dealer's hole card with a house edge of about 7%.
With perfect basic strategy, the rules decide the house edge:
| Rule | Effect on house edge |
|---|---|
| Blackjack pays 6:5 instead of 3:2 | +1.4% |
| Dealer hits soft 17 | +0.2% |
| No doubling after split | +0.14% |
| Single deck instead of eight | −0.5% (approx.) |
| Late surrender allowed | −0.08% |
A table with 3:2, dealer stands on soft 17, doubling after split and late surrender is close to the best you will find online. Mistakes matter more than rules: playing by feel typically costs 1–2% more.
Read each table's rules before you play; the name alone does not tell you the payouts.
Not in RNG blackjack: the deck is shuffled after every hand. In live blackjack, shoes are long and reshuffled well before the end, and Infinite tables play one hand for everyone, which makes counting impractical. Basic strategy is the most valuable skill online.
Martingale (double after a loss), Paroli (double after a win) and 1-3-2-6 change the shape of your results but not the house edge. Martingale in particular fails on a run of losses, which in blackjack happens more often than most players expect. Flat betting with basic strategy is the most cost-effective approach.
| RNG blackjack | Live blackjack | |
|---|---|---|
| Shuffle | Every hand | Shoe, reshuffled periodically |
| Minimum bet | Often C$0.50–C$1 | Usually C$1–C$5 |
| Demo | Usually | Rarely |
| Speed | As fast as you play | 50–70 hands an hour |
Practise basic strategy in RNG demo mode, then try live blackjack for the real-table feel.
Yes. In Ontario and Alberta, play at registered sites; elsewhere, provincial sites (PlayNow, Loto-Québec, ALC.ca, PlayNow SK) and licensed offshore casinos offer blackjack. See casinos by province.
Most bonuses count blackjack at 0–10% toward wagering, or exclude it, because its low house edge makes bonuses too easy to clear. Read the terms; see wagering requirements. Cashback bonuses are often better value for blackjack players.
Online blackjack works well on phones in portrait mode. Many RNG games show a hint button based on basic strategy. See casino apps.
Start in demo mode with the strategy chart open until the decisions feel automatic.
The dealer's advantage comes from one rule: you act first. If you bust, you lose even if the dealer busts afterwards. Basic strategy claws back most of that advantage through doubling, splitting and standing on stiff hands against weak dealer cards, but not all of it. That is why the best blackjack is still about 0.5% in the house's favour.
| Side bet | Wins when | Typical house edge |
|---|---|---|
| Perfect Pairs | Your first two cards are a pair | About 4–6% |
| 21+3 | Your two cards plus the dealer's up-card make a poker hand | About 3–4% |
| Insurance | The dealer has blackjack | About 7% |
They are entertainment bets: the main game with basic strategy is far better value.
| Game | Best RTP | Skill needed |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack | About 99.5% | Basic strategy |
| Video poker (9/6 Jacks or Better) | 99.54% | Hold strategy |
| Baccarat (banker) | 98.94% | None |
| Roulette (French, La Partage) | 98.65% on even-money bets | None |
